DESIGN CONCEPT
Jesus Christ Superstar explores the conflicting perspectives of Jesus and Judas. Ultimately their strained relationship leads Judas to betray Jesus, an action that results in both of their deaths. This narrative unfolds in a post-apocalyptic rock concert full of spectacle.
Death played a huge role in the way I approached this show. In moments of violence and mortality, red serves as a harbinger of death. At the beginning of the show, we see Jesus and Judas both enraptured in cool, clean, soft white light. As their relationship becomes tense and heated, so too do the hues that illuminate them. Eventually, Jesus finds himself surrounded by fiery golden light, implying both godhood and hell fire. Judas' death plunges the stage into a blood red, with stark white carving the character out of the bleak backdrop. Jesus' death in the final moments of the show ends the conflict, and the audience must contend with the polar viewpoints and consequences from both Jesus and Judas’ choices. Jesus' death is presented as a bleak and haunting, accompanied by a dramatic shift in the scenic environment as the vertical structures of the set ascend heavenward.
