DESIGN CONCEPT

Urinetown presents Capitalism played out to comical extremes. The poor have no choice but to pay the monopolistic Urine Good Company for the "privelege" to pee. When the idealistic Bobby Strong challenges the authorities, revolution bursts like a pipe.

My design for Urinetown saught to juxtapose the brutality of capitalistic greed with the youthful hope and love that Bobby embodies. Despite a dark, dingy, and gross environment, humanity perseveres through humor and optimism. The light cues in this production were filled with stark contrasts of both intensity and color. My design research led me to explore historical propaganda posters, and I was drawn to the dualtone color palettes from the 1930s and 40s. Each song featured one of these color palettes, juxtaposing two saturated colors. These colors brought special attention to the songs, standing against the bleak and crude world on the streets and the flourescent, clean, but lifeless Urine Good Company.
