DESIGN CONCEPT
On the cusp of superstardom, a Hip-Hop trio must come to a united perspective on the intersection of their race, art, and their response to the issue of police brutality. As they navigate their meteoric rise, they fracture, but when they rebuild their relationships they are stronger for it.
My design concept for Hype Man focused on bringing the audience into the space the characters occupied. The luxurious recording studio: a room designed for creativity but overshadowed by corporate pressure and control. The stage of the tonight show: a vibrant and expressive landscape for creativity to thrive. An arena stage: the setting of a tour spot on the bleeding edge of technology and art in production. Finally, the liminal space: The moments in between, a safe space belonging to each character, where they can share their deepest fears, hopes, and inspirations.
