DESIGN CONCEPT
Sondheim's magnum opus tells tales of love, loss, and heartache though through a lens of fairytale characters. Despite the fantastic nature of their world, the characters are grounded in a real, consequential story. My design concept for the show centered around the passage of time, including the days and night pivotal to the plot of act 1, as well as the stages of life that the characters find themselves in, their experience and wisdom guiding their choices in the woods. The production also addressed pathways, emphasizing how the characters navigate the woods, both literally and metaphorically. The final pillar of the design was the magic. The fantastic world glimmered, pusled, and danced in step with Sondheim's complex score. The design overcame a number of technical challenges, including a custom built platform in the audience and rotating scenic arches.
